save the ocean, save your straws

April 2018

This is a dress that I designed for a fashion show. This fashion show shed light on environmental issues, so every garment entered needed to bring light to an issue that the world faces. My concept was water pollution, mainly involving the abundance of straws that get thrown into the ocean every day. I began by sewing a bodycon slip dress, Then gathered straws from friends, restaurants and old drinks that I had. I spray painted all of the straws different shades of blue, black, orange and yellow. The colors represented the ocean and all the oil spills that take place and then result in fires. Then I hand sewed each straw on to the slip dress, in rows for a fringed effect. I was extremely happy with how it turned out, and was even more excited when it won an award for the Most Avant-Garde Construction.
